Moda Samskritam is the work on our desk right now: Bharat’s first Samskrita musical animation series — eleven episodes of 3D animation and song that teach children conversational Samskrita, released free for every child in the world.

Whose project this is

Let us say this first, because it matters: Moda Samskritam is not a Folksutra invention, and we make no claim on it. It belongs to a movement much larger than us, and the credit belongs there.

The series is the life’s work of Dr. Varsha Sarda, renowned for her revolutionary methods of teaching Samskrita to young minds. A decade ago, her songs and stories taught thousands of children — from Delhi to Dallas — conversational Samskrita, absorbed the way children absorb everything they love: by singing along. She wrote it, produced it, and is now reimagining it for today’s visual generation.

The project is led by Samskrita Bharati Canada, the Canadian chapter of the world’s largest Samskrita promotion movement, with Samskrita Bharati USA and Samskrita Bharati Australia alongside. Folksutra’s part is the one we know how to play: we are the creative studio, carrying Dr. Sarda’s songs and stories to the screen.

The series

Eleven episodes, each built around a single Samskrita word a child learns to sing — Vānaraḥ the monkey, Pipīlikā the ant, Mīnaḥ the fish, Meghaḥ the cloud, all the way to Kiñculakaḥ the earthworm. Each episode is a story told in state-of-the-art 3D animation, set to the music that captivated the first generation of Moda Samskritam children.

This is not edutainment with a vocabulary list attached. When Samskrita arrives through a story a child wants to hear and a song they cannot stop humming, it stops being a subject to study and becomes a world to inhabit.

The project has drawn warm support from the Samskrita animation community — including Ravishankar Venkateswaran, writer-director of Punyakoti, India’s first Samskrita animated feature, and Dr. Pradnya Shireesh Anjal, founder of Vedika EdTech. You can watch the trailer on the campaign site.

Free means free

The finished series will be distributed at no cost to schools, cultural centres and households everywhere — no subscription, no paywall, no catch. A child in a village school and a child in the diaspora get the same episodes on the same day.

The campaign

Production is funded by a public crowdfunding campaign, live now, with a goal of ₹36,00,000. Every rupee goes to the making — animation, music composition, voice acting, post-production and distribution — so that the series itself can stay free forever.

If this is work you want to exist, support it at modasamskritam.com — and tell a family who would love it.
